Adoption Application

*** PLEASE READ BEFORE FILLING OUT AN ADOPTION APPLICATION ***

We will only consider adoption applications within Southern California for our adult dogs. Please note that puppies under the age of 6 months will not be considered for adoption more than a few hours outside of San Diego County, CA. If you wish to adopt from us but you live outside of Southern California, please note that we will only consider out of area applications on a case by case basis for adult dogs only. We do not allow out of state or country adoptions. If you have any questions or need more information, please email us at adoptions@itsthepits.org . Thank you!!

The adoption process for It's The Pits involves an application, a phone interview, a homecheck and a meet and greet with a dog to dog interaction if applicable. All of our dogs are in foster homes so a full approved application, interview and homecheck are required prior to meeting any of our dogs for adoption.

Applications not completed in full detail will not be reviewed. After the application, phone interview, and homecheck are complete and approved, the final step in adoption is the meet and greet. Everyone living in your home (adults & children), as well as any resident dog(s) are required to be present at the meet & greet. If the meet and greet is successful, you will complete the  adoption agreement and pay the non-refundable processing fee. ($325 for dogs under 1 year, $295 for dogs over 1-8 years and $150 for seniors 9 years and up). The non-refundable processing fee helps cover shots (puppies may need additional shots at your cost depending on their age), microchip, spay/neuter and de-worm. Please be prepared to take the adopted dog home at that time? The adopted dog will go home with you at that time. Puppies are spayed/neutered between 4 to 5  months of age which is done at our vet so if you are interested in a dog younger than 5 months, there is additional paperwork involved as well. Altering the puppy at this age and at our vet is a non-negotiable.

Please note that we are a 100% volunteer based rescue. Our main concern is finding the best possible match for both you and our doggies. We are focused on finding compatible families for our dogs that are committed to a lifetime of proper care and love. Our adoption process is designed to help determine if the adoption is in the best interest of both the dog and the adopter. Please understand that while completing this application does not commit you to adopting one of our dogs, neither does it guarantee approval and that we will place one of our dogs in your home. It’s the Pits reserves the right to refuse adoption for any reason.

The adoption process for It's The Pits involves an application, a phone
interview, a homecheck and dog to dog interaction if applicable. You can meet any of our dogs that attend adoption events but almost all of our dogs are in foster homes so an application and interview are required prior to meeting any of our dogs not at an event.  Upon application and interview approval you are free to meet our dogs however a home check is required before any adoption is finalized.  Filling out an adoption application does not mean that you will
be approved to adopt. Adoptions outside of San Diego
County are difficult and only worked out in very specific
circumstances. We also have strict policies about adopting to active
military, our preference is, you are married, own your home, and be getting out of
active duty within the next year.  We also typically do not adopt female pits to homes
where there is already a female pit. And we require that all other dogs in
the home are spayed/neutered.

Puppies are spayed/neutered between 3.5 to 4.5 months of age so if you adopt
a dog younger than 4 months, there is a foster to adopt process involved as
